The drug, Addyi, was to be the first to be tested to treat patients with erectile dysfunction.
The trial, which will be carried out at the University of Melbourne Hospital, will include 60 men aged 18 to 75 with erectile dysfunction, and 50 men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Addyi is a testosterone replacement drug and is being tested by Australia’s top medical researchers.
“This is the first drug to be tested to treat erectile dysfunction in a male population,” said Dr David Horsley, the study’s lead investigator and director of the Melbourne Sexual Health Institute.
“It will be very important for the men to be tested in a way that is safe and in compliance with their health and well-being,” Dr Horsley said.
The drug will be marketed as a generic version of Viagra, a drug similar to the drug originally developed to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
Addyi will be available in five strengths – 25 mg, 50 mg, 75 mg, 100 mg, and 150 mg.
The trial was recently completed and is expected to take place from 1 July.
The first drug to be tested, Vyleesi, is approved for use in men over the age of 18.
The drug works by relaxing the muscles in the walls of blood vessels and allows them to flow back into the penis when sexually aroused.
The trial was carried out by the University of Melbourne’s sexual health centre, which provides comprehensive information and expertise to men’s sexual health and education groups.
The trial will also be a part of the Melbourne Sexual Health Institute, an independent sexual health care system in the, which is designed to help more men overcome their sexual health concerns.
The trial, which is expected to take place from 3 January to 3 March, will include 60 men aged 18 to 75 with erectile dysfunction. The men will be required to have a normal erection for one to three hours.
The researchers hope the drug will help them to regain a satisfying sexual experience.
In a surprising twist, the Food and Drug Administration is ordering doctors to remove certain drugs from the market, which could result in a massive $5 billion settlement.
The agency said it's conducting a clinical trial to determine whether the drug Viagra is safe for the general population, but it does not expect that the drug will be removed, and it is not clear how much it will cost.
The FDA is investigating whether it has enough evidence that doctors can determine whether certain drugs may have been dangerous for the general public.
Last week, the FDA said it is working with drug regulators to ensure that Viagra is safe for the general population and not the "dangerous" drugs. The drug could make it more difficult for doctors to prescribe, or potentially increase the risk of serious side effects, including heart attacks and strokes.
"This is an important step for the public," said Dr. JanetMusVERTIS, a division of the FDA's Office of Inspector General.
It's important for the FDA to be clear about what it considers safety risks. That means it will closely monitor the FDA's latest findings on the safety of Viagra and other drugs for which there's an increased risk of side effects, particularly heart problems, in people with certain medical conditions.
The drug is sold under the brand name Revatio, which also contains sildenafil, the same active ingredient used in Viagra. Viagra is available only by prescription, and it is illegal to buy or sell it without a doctor's approval.
The FDA will continue to review the results of its clinical trial, which is scheduled for early next year. If the results of the trial prove to be reliable, the agency will move to remove the drugs from the market.
